To the editor:
Your news article on the “John Hur variance" for the Rappahannock Lakes lot (Rappahannock \'ews. March 3) convinced me that the denial recommendation by the Planning Commission was wise and correct.
You described a 70-lot subdivision. with houses on less than half of the lots, already in serious trouble. (3-4 houses per acre, road surfaces too narrow for meeting cars to pass, a failing water system making private wells and septic systems necessary on some lots of 14 acre.)
There were no regulations concerning subdivisions in Rappahannock County at the time the land was divided. This did not guarantee that a house could be built on each lot any more than the state guarantees that the wells and drain fields currently being permitted will not fail.
