together, a convincing argument could certainly be made in favor of the by-pass alone, by virtue of existing traffic density. Add the four-lane proposal to the equation, and a bypass would seem to be mandatory.
But the by-pass will not be built, as the plan stands now. It was defeated, issues of safety and convenience notwithstanding, by those who felt that tourist business in the town might suffer. It- did not occur to anyone, apparently, that a fourlane highway might be equally detrimental in that regard.
A growing number of us would. like to keep things as they are: no autobahn; no by-pass. No loss to the countryside: no threat to the tourist trade. We all win.
It is quite possible, however, that we will all lose. If the four lanes of Fa. 211 522 are extended as far as Sperryville. it will become embarrassingly evident, within a very short time, that a by-pass is unperatue. It will be constructed forthwith: and Sperryville’s erstwhile tourist trade, seeking unspoilt landscape and quiet country lanes, will drift on flown to Criglersville.
