William Wade, superintendent of the Park Service’s Stephen T. Mather Employee Development Center at Harpers Ferry, W. Va., has been selected to be superintendent of Shenandoah National Park.
The appointment was announced by James W. Coleman Jr., regional director of the Mid-Atlantic Region. Mr. Wade replaces Ronald Wrye who served as superintendent for one year before becoming deputy regional director of the National Capital Region in Washington, D.C. In the interim, Assistant Superintendent Gerald Tays has been acting as superintendent.
At the Mather Center where he has served since 1985, Mr. Wade directed one of the two centers the Park Service maintains to train employees. Last year this eastern center provided 25 training courses and 49 other conferences in which 1600 people took part. Training center instructors also assisted at 20 other off-site courses.
Mr. Wade developed an improved system of identifying and tracking what training courses employees need in order to advance in the Park Service, a system that went into effect throughout the service this year; '
Before going to Harpers Ferry, he served as assistant superintendent at Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area in Pennsylvania and New Jersey from 1981 to 1985. He assisted the superintendent in directing a staff of 130 at this developing park and managing a budget of $3.8 million. During this period a General Management Plan, Land Protection Plan and Resource Management Plan were adopted for the park and NPS succeeded in curtailing the heavy truck traffic that had disrupted the main visitor road into the recreation area.
