Opponents of the plans for duallaning Rt. 211 from Washington to Sperryville failed to find recruits at the Rappahannock Planning Commission’s meeting last week. " As the commission received the 'draft revisions to the county’s comprehensive plan, which designates •the Flatwoods stretch for future - commercial development and calls ' for widening the highway’s six miles 'of remaining two lanes, John Cadwa"leder asked for reconsideration of "the project. For safety’s sake, Mr. ■Cadwaleder acknowledged that the highway might need to be four-laned around the Farmers Co-op. “But I question if it’s needed all the way to Sperryville.”
He recalled that in 1974, a Sperryville Citizens Committee opposed widening Rt. 211 through the village, with chairman Col. E. P. Luke maintaining that tourists come to the county for its villages and rural .'character, not for throughfares. "That same reasoning applies to the • proposal for dual-laning the six miles, Mr. Cadwaleder contended.
