“Our concern is to protect the scenic charm of the county . . . Large signs along the road are a distraction,” Chairman Lee Bird noted, as Rappahannock’s Board qf Zoning Appeals issued a special use permit to Charles Wilson for an antique shop while limiting the sign for the business to six square feet. But the board agreed to reconsider the size question, should Mr. Wilson determine that he needs more advertising space.
The antique and gift shop will be located in three accessory buildings on a 4.4 acre lot off Rt. 522 between Woodville and Boston. In addition, Mr. Wilson told the BZA at last Wednesday’s public hearing, his residence on the same parcel will also be used for the display of furniture, crafts, and gift items such as dolls.
Parking provisions meet the zoning ordinance’s standard and the Virginia Department of Transportation has advised that it has no additional requirements for egress or ingress with a business of “such low impact,” reported Zoning Administrator John McCarthy.
