'Cry Freedom'
The movie Cry Freedom will play at the Gay Street Theater on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 8 and 9 at 7:30 p.m. each evening. The movie stars Kevin Kline and Denzel Washington. Sir Richard Attenborough’s film about South Africa is important politically and dramatically. It’s based on the true story of white South African journalist Donald Woods, who befriended black activist Stephen Biko. There are some powerful sequences—mostly where South African oppression is shown or where Denzel Washington (Biko) is onscreen. Kevin Kline also gives a fine performance as Woods. The movie is rated PG. Admission is $3 for adults and $2 for children.
Red Cross meets Oct. 12
The annual meeting of the Fauquier Chapter of the American Red Cross will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 12 at 3 p.m. at the office of Surles and Associates, 100 Main Street, Warrenton.
Movie night free parents
The Child Care and Learning Center will offer a night of “Saturday Night at the Movies” for children ages three to 12 years during the month of October. The second night will be on Friday, Oct. 14. This evening will give parents a chance to go and hear Jesse Winchester at the Gay Street Theatre. CCLC will present a feature movie, cartoons, refreshments, and game time. The cost per hour per child will be $3. Refreshments are .25 cents per item. Parents must register by the day before so that we can get an accurate count of children. A sign-up sheet will be available at CCLC or parents can call 675-3237 to place the child’s name on the list. Families with more than one child will get a $1 per hour discount on each additional child.
Castleton VFD turkey shoot
The Castleton Volunteer Fire Department will hold its annual shooting matches at the fire hall beginning Saturday, Oct. 8, at 1 p.m. Only 12 guage shotguns will be allowed — no sleeves, no scopes. The department will also hold a ham and turkey dinner on Friday, Oct. 28, from 5:30-8 p.m. The public is invited to come and enjoy a delicious meal while making a contribution to the department.
Recycling Day Oct. 15
RALLY will hold its second Community Recycling Day on Saturday, Oct. 15, from 9-11 a.m. at the Rappahannock County Park. Newspapers and magazines (both bundled), glass (rinsed and separated into clear, amber and green), aluminum cans (rinsed), tin cans (rinsed), cardboard boxes (broken down) and plastics (rinsed) will be accepted.
