“This is certainly a good opportunity to expand the programs in our school system without costing any local tax dollars”, the superintendent advised, adding that Rappahannock people “have already paid for this through their state taxes, so we might as well try to get some of that money back.”
The superintendent explained that the state Department of Education has awarded Rappahannock a $16,000 grant to pay a part-time employee who will develop and implement the new remedial education program which requires all students who score in the bottom 25 percent on standardized tests to receive extra instruction in reading and mathmatics.
In addition, the county schools will receive $14,316 more than anticipated in the current school budget for Chapter I programs and $729 more for its “drug free education” grant. Dr. Gangel said he also expects more money than was budgeted from the federal government for special education but the exact figure for this category hasn’t yet been announced.
