wanted a seventh class period. Forty-eight percent of that number would use the additional period to add a new elective; 31 percent would add a currently offered course; 23 percent would add a study hall.
The 61 parents who answered the survey were similarly supportive, favoring the seven-period day by a 51-10 margin, and the 25 RCHS teachers responding endorsed seven class periods by 23-2.
Based primarily' (in the faculty survey, the committee came up with a list of possible Mirriculum additions: Latin I and advanced placement English (which would be given in the new electronic classroom and would be considered monitoring sections — not teaching sections); newspaper and yearbook (non-credit courses which would provide students with in-school time to work on those extra-curricular activities); drama, biology II, French IVand V, advanced physical education for grades 11 and 12, and architectural drawing.
Also, combination 18-week courses in (1) business law and employment seminar and (2) marriage in the family and child care/parenting.
Exactly how the seven periods are to be structured is still undecided. In addition, the report included no estimates on cost for the program expansion.
“There are some things that still need to be worked out,” Mr. Chappell told the School Board, saying this will come at the committee’s January meeting.
