Offering a preseason prediction about his Rappahannock Panthers, varsity basketball coach Gary Leake e pointed to its outside game as a big change. "In the past, we have been known as an inside team. Now, we'll be more likely to take the outside shot. I'm pleased to havevthat asset."
Last Friday, Julian Groves personified that "asset."
The big junior hit a three point shot with only seconds left to boost the Panthers past the Central High Falcons, tilWith teammate and leading scorer Eric Dunn tied up by a double-teaming Falcon defense. Groves was the open man.
The team had worked the play out in advance. Coach Leake said, with whomever was left unguarded by Central's double coverage on Dunn to take the open shot. The only surprise was Groves opting for the long, outside shot which netted a bonus three point conversion, and the game winning point.
The victory was an important one for the Panthers, who were ranked even w ith Central and Strasburg as favorites for the Bull Run District title in a preseason coaches' poll. The win brought the team's district record to 2-0 (d-0 on the season). while Central slipped to 1-1 in Bull Run play.
Coach Leake, however, said the team’s uneven offense continues to bother him. He noted that the Panthers can't count on a last second "Hail Mary" shot to pull out the victory.
But. he added, the consistent defense exhibited during the season's early games will carry the team on. Doug Smith, who has consistently provided rebounding strength for the Panthers over the past two seasons, once again led the team with 12. Overall Rappahannock snapped up 42 rebounds to the Falcons 2S.
