Firefighters have quickly put out the blazes, limiting them generally to much less than one acre, with little damage to the fields and woods.
Sheriff Woodward called the burning of the vacant building an ominous development, since it might indicate that the arsonist is switching his targets from woods and fields to structures.
“We are asking anybody who sees anything that looks suspicious, or who knows anything about this series of fires, to contact this office,” Sheriff Woodward said. Something as minor as the license number of a suspicious vehicle could be the break needed to arrest the arsonist and stop the fires, he emphasized.

Arson of a building is a Class 3 felony in Virginia, and carries a maximum penalty of five to 20 years in prison. Anyone convicted of intentionally setting brush fires faces a sentence of one to five years in prison, or 12 months in jail, and a fine of up to $1,000. The penalties would carry for each count, that is, for each fire the arsonist is convicted of setting.
