Though Central jumped out to a (lUK'k lead, 11-4, the Panthers resjnmded by spreading out in a zone defense to control the inside shooting lane. Forcing the Falcons to take lower percentage outside shots, by halftime the score was tied at 28.
The third quarter saw Rappahannock continuing to press on defense while outshooting Central. 48 to 54 percent. By midway through the fourth quarter the Panthers had jumped to a commanding 49-40 lead.
Coach Leake later explained that the team lost its composure during the final four minutes, which allowed the Falcons to tie the game again at 49. Two RAppahannoek mistakes, a foul on Carroll Frye and a subsequent technical against Coach Leake, helped the Falcon comeback.
The two teams continued to scrap as the clock wound down, with Smith and Dunn each sinking two foul shots for lift Rappahannock’s lead to 58-54. A three point field goal anti two foul shots put Central back on top, 59-58. with less than 10 seconds remaining.
Groves put the ball in play for the Panthers, then moved quickly down the court and took a return pass. His quick shot from outside gave Rappahannock the three points they needed for victory as the buzzer sounded.
Streak continues w ith victory- over Brentsville
On Tuesday, the Panthers hosted Brentsville district in yet another home contest, and again Rappahannock had little trouble handling the visiting Tigers, topping them 67-46.
With his starting five showing complete control of the passing game. Coach Leake substituted freely throughout the game. Afterward, he pronounced himself, "extremely pleased with my starters' performance, but tremendously disappointed with (the effort from) the bench."'
Though the Panthers played from the bench during much of the game, the team's five starters still accounted for 61 of Rappahannock’s 67 points.
