heavy, “winter-weight” bags. The secret to staying warm is more in the amount of space your body must heat up to get cozy. A very narrow-cut sleeping bag, even though relatively light will get you through just about the worst night you can expect to encounter at this latitude.
Outdoors
If you can spread your sleeping pad on a bed of dry pine needles and snuffle down into a warm bag on a clear night, you probably won’t want to set up a tent, providing wind chill is not a factor and the forecast is favorable. But you can hardly count on every winter night to be clear and dry, and wind chill often is a major factor. So you’ll need to tote a tent to break the. wind and keep the elements off you.
If you already are a moderately dedicated backpacker and/or winter camper, you already know the quantum improvements in the manufacture of mountain tents over the last decade. The rip-stop nylon A-frame that was so deservedly popular in the 1960s has been supplanted by the commodious headroom of round-top tents. The fiberglass wand tent hoops that support these structures are a breeze to transport, and in addition to headroom, the closer-to-vertical walls of these tents protect you from being awakened by a sag of snow-laden nylon in your face.
