snerm jonn nenry wood ward said on Monday he believes that an arsonist is loose in the Castleton area. He requested that anyone in that area who sees any suspicious actions, or has any knowledge about the series of brush and woods fires, to contact the Sheriffs Department.
Since Sunday, Oct. 16, when two brush fires were reported within a half-hour in the Castleton area, Sheriff Woodward said there have been a total of nine suspicious fires set along the roadsides on routes 626, 616 and 618 in the Hope Hill area.
On Sunday night, another suspicious blaze leveled an abandoned log house in the same area. Sheriff Woodward said that when firefighters reached the scene the structure was, “flat gone, burned to the ground.”
The owner, Marvin Dodson, told Sheriff Woodward that he hadn’t been near it for a week. The abandoned house was being used as a barn and storage building for “collectibles’.’ he bought at sales, and there was no reason for anyone to be there.
“Usually,” Sheriff Woodward said, “I wouldn’t call a fire suspicious until I had ruled out all other possibilities. This one I’m calling suspicious until I have reason to believe otherwise.”
Seeking a pattern, Sheriff Woodward said that the fires have been reported on Sunday, Wednesday and Friday nights, with the exception of one Saturday night blaze.
