And, turning to Mr. Miller’s general opposition to the renovation of the system, Mr. Morehouse said. “It is fiscally responsible to replace the system. It is .'>0 years old, and it is about shot. We are spending unpre dictable sums of money on repairs. 1 find it untenable to go along from year to year spending $10,000 to $15,000 on bandaids for a 50-year-old system.”

Turning the debate to the condi tion of the iron pipe in the system. Mr. Miller described it as cast iron lined with concrete which has aged well.

Mr. Morehouse admitted that much of the cast iron pipe, which runs from the supply spring into town and down one st reet. “is in pre tty good shape. But it does pit, and we have acidic soil.”

Acidic soil tends to corrode underground pipes from the outside in, eventually causing the line to leak without any apparent damage.

The cast iron has been repaired. Mayor Morehouse continued, in places where it was not buried deep enough and frost heave caused it to move and split. He theorized that may have been the cause of a break somewhere between the spring and the reservoir, d which still has not been located.

And. he added, some of the three-and four-inch cast iron mains are not adequate for fire flow. The engineers' report, he said, recommends doubling the main size to an eight-inch pipe into town and on the main loop and six-inch pipes for the rest of the distribution system.

“It just doesn’t make sense to me,” Mr. Miller retorted, “to spend $1.1 million on a town system that is almost adequate. Replace the plastic and galvanized (steel) pipe and you would have an adequate system."
