What a hell of a Christmas!” I became mad at Spurlin’s friend “for being so chicken.” I even got mad at Spurlin himself, momentarily, for being so inconsiderate as to crash his plane practically on Christmas Eve!
But I fought with myself in vain. Maybe there is a Christmas Spirit —for something seemed gradually to calm my rebellious spirit as we click-clocked southward over the rails. Some spirit out of the blue seemed to take “Red” Spurlin’s side — and take it quite well. Before long I was admitting that this spirit, “the other fellow,” did have a point here and there. I had to concede that this was going to be a terrible Christmas for the Spurlin family down in Texas. This was a fatal concession on my part and a firm foothold, never to be given up, was established by “the other fellow.”
