The Christmas giveaway to the needy organized by the Rappahannock 4-H Heads-Up Club and the county’s Girl Scouts was a tremendous success.
Planned as part of a “Support the People” program sponsored by the two organizations, the event was held at the Washington Fire Hall last Saturday. Even at the early hour of 8 a.m., we arrived just as several people stopped by with more clothes to donate.
Inside the hall, 12 tables were completely filled with clothing. It was all separated, from infants up to large men’s and women’s sizes. There was also a large selection of gloves, mittens, hats, blankets, kniek knacks and many pairs of shoes. Another table was filled with donated Christmas gifts, each gaily wrapped and tagged with the age and sex of the intended recipient.
About four families stopped in during the morning, and then, promptly at 10 a.m., Santa Claus arrived. He visited with the children and adults, and took dowm some Christmas lists as well.
All during the next few hours families continued to come in and pick up clothing, household goods and Christmas gifts.
One particular gentleman who stopped by made it worth all the effort! As he walked through the door 1 you could see the hesitancy in his eyes. Quickly, two of the girls stepped forward to rescue him.
