A decision by the Commonwealth Transportation Board to remove the truck traffic ban on U. S. 17 between Warrenton and Marshall will take effect next August after final widening at the road’s north end near Interstate 66 is completed, according to Virginia Department of Transportation Resident Engineer Robert Moore.
The lifting of the ban also affects U. S. 15 between U. S. 29 and 1-66 near Gainesville in Prince William County. The restrictions were implemented in 1984 and later extended.
The ban will be lifted early next year when a short section of U.S. 17 is widened near Marshall. Work on the project is underway.
“The reasoning behind the decision concerned safety on the roads being used by the trucks instead of Route 17. It was the best decision that could have been made,” said Mr. Moore.
Tractor-trailers were restricted from using U. S. 17 indefinitely in November 1984 due to an increase in traffic accidents involving tractortrailers, according to a VDOT official.
The restrictions were prompted by the rising number of accidents and fatalities involving trucks on the 10.4-mile section of U. S. 17.
