first oi all, you are going to want something substantial between your sleeping bag and the ground if you plan to be outside counting the stars as you fall asleep. You’ll need a sleeping pad on the floor of your tent even on those nights when the stars hide above snow-laden clouds.

The synthetic fiber people have in recent years developed an insulatirig material even better than the old standby, Ensolite. It’s ethyl-vinyl-acetate (EVA). The advantage of an EVA pad over Ensolite is its resistance to compression; it will maintain its thickness and insulating value for more years than they have thus far been able to project. A three-eighth-inch EVA pad will do nicely, but if you admit to muscle aches and pains after a long day of toting a heavy pack or polling through deep powder snow, you might want to get a pad with some extra length, so you can double it over under your hips and shoulders.

Cold weather camping would seem to dictate the unequaled warmth of down when you are considering a sleeping bag. But winter also means wet. It means condensation in most snug little mountain tents. And this means hoping the morning sun will draw the dampness out of a down bag. Lots of luck.

The good news is technology has once again made some advances in the construction of synthetic fiberfilled bags. We now have remarkably lump-resistant fiber bags, which are also warmer than their prototypes. Now you can spend a warm night in a synthetic fiber sleeping bag that was soaked when you climbed into it.
