If the school budget for next year is approved by the Board of Supervisors, Rappahannock will be offering a higher starting salary for teachers than any of the surrounding counties. However the salary for the county’s most experienced teachers will continue to lag behind.
All of the school budgets have been approved by their local school boards, but none have been approved by their local governing bodies, so a comparison is somewhat like comparing apples and oranges. Some school boards and school administrations approve “wish lists” and send them on to their supervisors, who then do the pruning and paring.
Others, like Rappahannock’s, are more pragmatic, considering political and financial realities before sending their budgets to their supervisors.
If the various school budgets are approved, or if changes in them do not affect teacher salaries, Rappahannock’t proposed starting salary of $22,045 will be $45 higher than the second highest in the area, Fauquier County, which proposes to start its teachers at $22,000.
Next will come Culpeper with a starting salary of $21,525, followed by Page County with a proposed start
