France surrounds Geneva on three sides and it’s a five minute drive over the border to cheaper shopping. The supermarche has huge stainless steel vats of white, red and rose wine from which you fill your own container at about a buck a liter. Does the Giant in Warrenton have that yet? The Saturday farmer’s market in nearby Femey, France is quite the experience with its huge selection of sausages, cheeses, fish and fresh bread of all sorts. Then there are the chicken, pheasant and lapin (rabbit) corpses hanging in their respective stalls, the cheval (horse) meat stall, the stall with 20 different kinds of olives. Now that stall is always a stopping place for me.
Also at the market are the best and most varied salad greens I have ever encountered and not an iceberg lettuce to be seen. The eggs have “France” stamped pn their ends. All this followed up by a bouquet of flowers. Genevans are big on flowers.
Genevans are also big on pets. TherYe on the bus, in the stores and restaurants. Our cat, Calvin, is a regular at the nearby World Health Organization restaurant. I’ve had reports of him in the kitchen mooching. Can you imagine your pet in the local restaurant mooching? At The Inn? He is very friendly and walks up to everyone.
