Research at Virginia Tech and in Pennsylvania and Maryland has shown that gypsy moths, as well as many other insects, can be controlled with relatively small amounts of systemic insecticides implanted or ipjected directly into the trunks or flare roots of trees.

This technique avoids the problem of aerial drift of the insecticide and allows specific trees to be treated, thus avoiding unwanted spraying. One product with a general-use registration, which is available to homeowners for implantation in trees for gypsy moth control, is Acecap (Reg. T.M. of Creative Sales, Inc., Fremont, NE 68025).

Acecaps are small gelatin capsules that contain the organophosphate insecticide acephate, known as Orthene (Reg. T.M. of Chevron Chem. Co.). Each capsule contains 0.902 grams of formulation with a high portion of active ingredient (97 percent, turns a total of 0.875 grams acephate) and care should be taken when handling the capsules.
