The race is sponsored by the Rappahannock Recreation Authority, with all proceeds going to benefit the Rappahannock County Park. This year, one of the authority’s priorities is repainting and relining the tennis courts at the park, Ms. Lillard said. Other money will go toward necessary maintenance and repairs at the facility, located on U.S. 211 just outside Washington.
“We are hoping for a good day and a good crowd,” Ms. Lillard said, remembering last year’s cool, rainy day which held the turnout down.
Besides runners from miles around, mothers pushing baby strollers, children getting some exercise, walkers enjoying the countryside and others just out for an ambitious Saturday morning stroll are usually among the entrants in the race.
Serious runners are awarded hand-made trophies for their toil -another Fodderstack tradition. Local artist Maggie Rogers has created a new design for this year’s trophies; which will be awarded in eight categories to first, second and third-place winners.
