To implant the Acecaps, holes are drilled in a spiral pattern in the lower trunk of the tree about four inches apart. The holes are drilled 3/8 inch in diameter to a depth of 1 1/4 inch below the cambium surface; more information is provided on the label. Holes are drilled to insure the insecticide can move into the phloem and the outer xylem rings of the tree.
The number of holes depends on the size of the tree (one hole per 10 cm or four inches of trunk circumference, be drilled although placement may vary with the branching pattern of the tree if large branches are present). It is recommended to drill holes in a spiral pattern to insure the tree will not be girdled.
One capsule is tamped into each hole. The capsules are left in the tree. The acephate is released slowly and may provide more than one year’s control. Healthy trees should have little problem with wound closure and the drilled hole usually heals within one season, although the possibility of splits in the wood exists. The manufacturer recommends that no wound dressing be applied.
