When it comes to competing in the actual races, Borgens said there are many things a runner must concentrate on. “You have to pay attention to what is going on,” he said. “Your rhythym, your stride, your arm positioning are all important factors.”
The most important factor ispace. A 3:15:00 marathon averages out to a 7'/2 minute per mile pace. Borgens said that he tries to run each of the miles within 30 seconds of each other. “If you come out at the start and run a five-minute mile, you’ll be exhausted by the 10-mile mark,” he said. “The key is to try and pace each mile as evenly as possible.”
