Cheryl Alexander’s third grade class at Rappahannock County Elementary School is learning that the written word creates action.
The 26 third graders have been writing letters to major pharmaceutical companies in this country asking for surgical gloves and syringes to be donated to a children’s hospital in St. Petersburg, Russia.
The children are getting results.
Ellie Clark’s call to one company was heard immediately and 12 boxes of surgical gloves and five boxes of syringes were forwarded. Toby Merchant’s company, CONVALES in The Plains, after receiving a letter, has promised surgical gloves, also.
Besides letters of appeal to pharamaceutical companies, the children plan letters to Delta Airlines and Aeroflot Airlines — two airlines that fly to the west-central Russian seaport — asking them to deliver the donated supplies free of charge.
“They have been working on this project since October,” said Mrs. Alexander.
A project of this caliber for children of this age is a major undertaking and takes several months to complete.
Sitting behind a small oval-shaped desk in room 13, the seven-year veteran teacher said that end results may not be available until school is over.
