Mrs. Jamieson reported that she had discussed Gov. Wilder’s proposal to cut state funding for libraries by 50 percent with Del. Jerry Wood and with Ida Patton of the state library. She said that she had suggested to Del. Wood that there was fat in the state library operation but not at our local level.
She said Del. Wood had agreed to vote not to cut funding for local libraries. She said Ms. Patton said the state library was part of an separate budget and cuts there would not necessarily help local libraries, but that a groundswell of local opposition had caused lawmakers to take another look at library cuts.
Mrs. Jamieson said she believed funding would be cut, but not by 50 percent.
Member John McCarthy said he believed the proposed drastic cuts for libraries and the Extension Service was designed to build support from a combination of rural and urban interests for the governor’s tax on medical practitioners.
