The Library Board voted not to curtail the hours of parttime staffers at last Thursday’s board meeting. Board members said they will wait and see what action the Board of Supervisors takes on their request for an additional appropriation of $13,700.
County Administrator John McCarthy, who is a member of the Library Board, said he had talked with library treasurer Helen Platt and had received additional information about library funds and would support the request to the supervisors.
Vice chairman Mary Jamieson said, “I don’t think we should cut anybody’s hours. We’ve worked so hard to get the hours up, and every hour is used.”
They will, however, shorten Wednesday evening hours and close at 8 p.m. Member Grace Sims said most Wednesdays nobody comes to the library between 8 and 9 p.m.
The board has tried to cut expenses by lowering the thermostat to 68 and not using outside lights in the evening unless there is a meeting at the library. They have also cut back on the purchase of books.
