Have you ever noticed how
many people, after having led a life of crime and or sin and dissipation, be it drugs, gambling, robbery—on and on eventually (or should we say occasionally) become reformists? A second story man becomes a consultant on home security. A famous movie star formerly hooked on drugs and prosecuted for possession gives lectures at high schools on the evil of addiction. Magic Johnson advocates celibacy from the lectern and Pete Rose holds school of the evils on gambling— and so it goes.
This expertise and reformation normally occurs after being caught. A side observation is that while in jail awaiting the next parole hearing a great percentage get a spiritual fix and are bom again. Hallelujah! And then they start stealing from the pulpit.
As a result of this newly created activity there has been founded a new business to find speaking engagements for the reformed miscreants. One such is *The Agency For Bad Examples.” The brochures are attractive and use such ads as: our Bad Examples are the best that money can buy; they also serve who only stand as Bad Examples. I can imagine frustrated parents saying to the indolent child, “If you can’t do anything else, you could at least be a Bad Example.”
An employment official would say, “You’re fired, you aren’t even a Bad Example.”
Recently heard in the Agency: “Yes sir, may I help you?” A seedy, unshaven, obese man f answers, “Uh, er, is this the place that finds lecture jobs for us?” He looks furtively about.
“Yes indeed, we are foremost in our field, what is your specialty, where did you go wrong?”
