All 14 of the students presented drawings and props that cleverly illustrated their assigned words. A' drawing of a heart and soul illus-' trated dovetail, a dog dressed in a toga acknowledged the Latin root of the word dissent, and cleavage was shown as a piece of mica rock representing division as in countries at war. From all reports, the assignment was a success. The students eiyoyed the challenge and classmates were easily able to recall the meanings of their vocabulary word? by remembering the imaginative renderings.
Latins students compete
Twenty-two students from Wakefield School in Marshall attended the Certamen competition at W.T. Woodson High school on Jan. 11. The Latin I Experienced team earned Second Place in competition with 12 other teams.
Team captain was Jody Waldron of Rectortown. Also competing were Molly Chase of Warren ton, Alex Kelly of Castleton and Scott Updike of Washington, Va.
The other Latin I Experienced team placed sixth. Members were captain Trevor Herndon of Warrenton, Van DeBergh of Washington, Va., Jed Davies of Warrenton, and Amy Lightcap of Front Royal.
The Latin II Inexperienced team also faced off against 12 teams and placed fourth. They were led by captain Michael Viega of Winchester with Jennifer Galli of Charles Town, W.Va., and Britt Krivicich and Tom Wadlow of The Plains as team members.
Finally, the Latin II Experienced team placed third among the 12 competing teams. The captain was Kirsten Burton of Warrenton. Team members were Christina Cheney of Manassas, Peter Culley of Summit Point, W.Va., and Stephanie Harre of Warrenton.
Other students competing on the Latin I level were: Amy Benedum of Marshall, Ashley Quincey and Alexander Schefer of Warrenton, Celine Senseney of Charles Town, W.Va., Anne Wadlow of The Plains and Mary Beth Williams of Flint Hill.
The teams were accompanied by faculty advisor Maureen Beabout.
