. In a few months, the Washington; Architectural Review Board (ARB) j should have a hew document to< guide it. The town’s new Historic! District Ordinance (the current one' has been the subject of some contro-; versy) is headed to the Town Council for a public hearing and a vote whether to adopt it. \ 1
Three members of the town Plai& ning Commission, Louise van Dort, |\ Susan Panish and Arthur Neufeld,' hashed over the latest draft of the * legislation during a brief meeting! Monday night. !
The main sticking point was a; section entitled “General Standards” that had been overhauled by council member Ray Gooch earlier in the week. General Standards and another section dealing with the town’s procedure to purchase historical property before it is allowed to be demolished were the only parts ot] the 16-page document not approved Monday night.
Of particular interest to the planners was a paragraph that read, “The ARB shall remain mindful of the variety of architectural styles and periods present in the Town of Washington and shall not insist upon. any particular style or period in approving or disapproving architectural features, so long as the proposed new construction, reconstruction or substantial alteration of h building, fence or structure is compatible with the architectural style and period of any existing improvements to be reconstructed or altered of existing improvements in close proximity to »any new construction.”
