Over 115 skiers ranging from age three to grade 12 have taken to the slopes at Bryce Resort as Wakefield School in Marshall begins its 12th ski season. In addition to the Wakefield students, parents, faculty, and staff members join the ski program.
The Wakefield Ski Club is one of the largest school ski programs in the area. Over the years, the Wakefield program has produced some of the most accomplished young skiers in Northern Virginia. Every year a number of the students rank in the NASTAR (National Standard Race) competition which ranks young skiers against the time of U.S. Ski Team member Nate Bryan, the fastest NASTAR racer in the country.
Paula Campbell, the director of the ski program at Wakefield, commented that the ski conditions at Bryce have been excellent despite the warm weather.
As the skiers take to the slopes, Rob Saville, the athletic director, has announced schedules for the spring sports programs. The girls tennis team is beginning the season with hopes of making it the 4th winning season in a row. The team has 11 matches scheduled under the coaching guidance of Ann Egan.
There are three returning players, including Michelle Egan of Warrenton, who was second seed last year; Alison Martin of Flint Hill, who was third seed; and fifth seed Ashley Quincey of Warrenton.
In addition, there are several new players, including Alex Quincey also of Warrenton, Stephanie Torneden of Flint Hill and Celine Senseney of Charles Town, W. Va.
The boys teams also has 11 matches scheduled. Team' captain Michael Irani of Front Royal will be a returning player. Irani was top seeded last year with a 7-2 singles record. Matt Durbin of Warrenton and Tom Wadlow of The Plains will also be returning. New players include Kyle Averill of Orlean. John Landis, a Wakefield alumnus and current faculty member, will be the coach. Coach Landis expects to concentrate on training and conditioning for what he calls “a season of rebuilding.”
Wakefield will also field a golf team. Currently four matches are scheduled with an additional four “in the works.” The home games will be played at Bowling Green Country Club with Headmaster Alan Saunders as coach. Michael Irani will join the golf team in between tennis matches as will senior Justin Harrell of Haymarket.
