“If we would have been forced to use what the people had, we would have had nothing,” he said, adding that even though their homes were poor and their lives difficult, the people were very proud.
“It gives you a real insight to how people treat each other and its effects,” he said.
Coming home is often harder than working in the conditions each mission presents.
“I get frustrated I cannot do more,” he said, adding with a second thought that his frustration is “a fight I have with myself often.”
Besides a deep appreciation for life, Mr. Fishback has developed an even deeper understanding of outsiders and insiders.
“You gain an insight to yourself,” he said.
“No matter what the conditions are in other jplaces, no matter how poor or how little the people have, they are more at peace than any American I’ve ever met,” he said with pride.
Being self-employed allows Mr. Fishback the freedom to pursue each mission.
“I’m thinking of Brazil next,” he said with a smile looking outward across the hills of Rappahannock County.
