It’s been an uphill battle for former Sen. Eugene McCarthy seeking the Democratic Party nomination for president.
The Woodville resident will be on the ballot in New Hampshire, along with many others, but in other states party chairmen have made the decision that his campaign is not “serious” and have kept his name off the ballot.
He says he may file court challenges in some of those states, perhaps Maryland or Michigan. He says he may be joined in the suits by Patrick Buchanan and David Duke on the Republican side and “three or four” other Democrats who have also been denied ballot access.
“The two-party monopoly has made third parties ineffective,” he said. “So, it’s necessary to force the two parties to include extreme positions, although I don’t consider mine extreme,” he added.
He was also excluded from the NBC candidates’ debate, but he did appear, along with former California Gov. Jerry Brown and former Massachusetts Sen. Paul Tsongas, on the Phil Donahue Show in December. He said he is still getting mail from supporters as a result of his appearance on that show.
