Losing Brown definitely hurt, said Coach Leake, although he stressed that the squad’s success was a result of contributions firom a number of players. “To be honest with you, in the whole Junior Panthers team I see a whole group of stars in the future.”
“Jason’s a main cog in the eighth grade, but he’s surrounded by a lot of decent players as well,” he said.
Volleyball team eyes making district playoffs
The varsity volleyball team hopes for a solid turnout to see it play a number of upcoming key games that will determine whether or not it makes the four-team Bull Run District Tournament.
Against a strong Central squad Jan. 27 the Lady Panthers dropped the first match 15-11 and then fell behind 14-1 in the second game before rallying to cut the final score to 15-8. “In that it was a loss, it was positive,” said Coach Paul Paratore. “I was very pleased and proud of them.”
The JV team showed a lack of confidence, said Coach Paratore, losing 15-0,15-8.
The varsity team barely missed the four-team playoffs last season and hopes to make it this year. With a 7-4 record, 3-3 in the district, the team’s chances are good, but a lot depends on their finish. Coach Paratore appealed, to RCHS sports fans to show up at the Feb. 10 district game at home against Manassas Park. If they win that one, they will most likely have an elimination game against Clarke to determine the fourth seed in the tourney.
Other coming games include at Strasburg, Jan. 30; home against Mason (non-district) Feb. 3; and home against Brentsville (non-district) Feb. 12 for Parent’s Night.
“If we can get a crowd, we should be able to win those three games and • go to the tournament,” said Coach Paratore.
