After 20 years of declining apple tree numbers, the 1992 Virginia Apple and Peach Tree Survey, released last month, shows an increase of nearly 500,000 trees on commercial apple orchards. The same survey reveals that Rapphannock County is now sixth largest in the state in terms of production and third in terms of trees.
In 1982, Rappahannock was shown to have 66,098 total trees, approximately 48 trees per acre. In 1987, Rappahannock's figures ticked up to 74,510 total trees with approximately 43 trees per acre. By 1992, however, Rappa- - hannock had leaped up to some fairly astounding figures — 179,798 total trees, averaging approximately 183 trees per acre.
