I bought my first Rappahannock County peaches last week at one of our local orchards.

According to my co-worker and agricultural agent, Tommy Williams, this year’s peach crop should be bountiful and high quality due to no frost and plenty of rain this spring.

Peach nutrition pointers

A sweet juicy peach weighs in at only 50 calories. The majority of calories come from carbohydrates, a quick source of energy. Peaches are a source of vitamins A and C. They are high in potassium and contain very little sodium.

Selecting peaches

Look for peaches with fresh creamy or golden undercolor. A rosy blush is pretty, but “red” does not mean “ripe” and the varieties’ blushes differ. Avoid peaches with wrinkles, brownish spots, or traces of green on their skin.

There are two types of peaches: clingstone and freestone. A clingstone peach does just what its name says - the flesh (fruit) clings to the stone (pit). Clingstone peaches are grown primarily for processing. In freestone peaches,
