ones are designed to kill only specific pests.”
The aggressive plan for the future of Mellen Plantation has moved the operation to the cutting edge of technology. Sophisticated computers with programs designed to give the most up-to-date information about weather and disease conditions allow the Meltons to monitor every aspect of the day-to-day conditions of their orchard.
Mellen also installed an unusual and highly sophisticated irrigation system. Water drawn from a body of water on the plantation, is sent throughout the rows of trees where it spurts at intervals in small, misting sprays designed not to compact the soil.
Mellen’s techniques and success have drawn the attention of apple growers both home and abroad. Last year the Meltons were hosts to an international fruit tree association, which visited the orchard, said Mike, because “Mellen has the highest density of trees east of the Missippi.”
It appears that Mellen orchard is just getting started. A winning management team with an agressive owner/manager at the helm sets the operation in place to expand even more in the future.
