The program is the LABO - 4-H exchange said C. Dean Allen, Virginia Cooperative Extension 4-H Youth specialist who coordinates the program. “The experience of living in Japan paves the way for more economic ties in the future,” he said.
The LABO program in Japan teaches English to youngsters starting at about age five. The 4-H program, which offers a variety of international experiences, has been associated with LABO for about 25 years.
More than 1,200 Japanese LABO members come to the United States to experience living with an American family. Groups of Virginia youth, number from six to 20, travel to Japan every summer. Cost for the trip is about $2,000, which is maily for airfare. The youngsters live with families as part of the exchange. “We are already making plans for a 1993 exchange,” said Helen W. Smith, Extension Agent for Rappahannock County. “We have four local 4-H’ers who have been selected to be part of the Virginia delegation to Japan in 1993.”
