As the faithful readers know, the last column was titled “Day By Coon.” The reason for this was two-fold. First, I was on a two week trip west and had procrastinated and not prepared a column, second Carl Cool volunteered to produce an item. Since it was about me, what else could I do but to encourage him.
You who have not met Carl, should. He is a retired state department employee and former ambassador to Nepal. He has many interesting stories to tell. I hope that he volunteers again.
While I was away a new editor was announced. Things like this always happen when I am away. On three occasions that I remember, I was replaced. When I was 13 years old and the proud patrol leader of the Murtaugh, Idaho troop I suffered my earliest rejection.
During summer camp about 10 of us were selected to take a three-day side trip to a Mountain Lake. When we returned I was informed that my patrol had a meeting and they elected Ralph Perkins and I was out. I haven’t sought elective office since then.
Anyway, about the new editor, I must admit to being edgy about new bosses. My happiest times have always been when no one was in charge. I might add that my worst jobs were when I was in charge. The first time was when I was put in charge of some pall bearers at a funeral when I was eight years old. This was also an event I have relived a thousand times as my most embarrassing moment. I will relate this event to you later if I can overcome my shame.
