As a 1992 graduate of Rappahannock County High School, I was very dismayed by the article entitled “Alcohol is First Drug of Choice for Rappahannock Teenagers” printed in the July 9 edition of the Rappahannock News.
First of all, when this survey was presented at school, the students were told that no one would see their responses. Naturally, we thought that it would remain internal and were therefore shocked to see those percentages splashed across the paper.
Because of the elementary nature of the questionnaire, the irrelevancy of the questions to students’ situations, and the fact that the students were assured that their responses would not be individually scrutinized, many students simply did not take the survey seriously. The survey was discussed among the students afterward and most students could not believe that we had been presented something that absurd to fill out.
I would prefer not to pass any blame on this subject, but I am disappointed that this “confidential” information was given out. My concern is to present some facts to the public - that there was most certainly a margin of error to be con
