More than 60 seventh graders at Rappahannock County Elementary School walked across the stage Tuesday morning to receive diplomas for completing the D.A.R.E. program.
Taught by Capt. Jeff Brown of the Rappahannock Sheriffs Department, the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) program teaches children s how to say “NO” to drugs and alcohol.
The program started in California 10 years ago and came to Virginia six years ago Capt. Brown said. Today it is in 130 of 133 school systems in the state, he added.
The program is aimed at fifth greaders and they were watching Tuesday as the seventh graders walked across the stage. Capt. Brown said he taught two classes last year and will do so again this year, one for each fifth and seventh grade. That way he will guarantee the information has reached all of the uppper classes at the school over the last two years.
Beginning next year he will be offering the class only to the fifth grade. The D.A.R.E. program is a fairly extensive curriculum and Capt. Brown spent 45 minutes each week with the students throughout the semester.
At the graduation ceremony, he told the students, “Today the word for you is ‘challenge.’ I am going to challenge you to use the knowledge you have gained, understand what is going on.”
