Jesse Von Fange, a fifth grade student at St. Luke’s School, won the school-level competition of the National Geography Bee on Jan. 15, and a chance at a $25,000 college scholarship. The school-level Bee, at which students answered oral questions on geography, was the first round in the fifth annual National Geography Bee, which is sponsored by National Geographic WORLD, the Society’s magazine for children, and Amtrak.
The kick-off for this year’s Bee was the week of Jan. 4, with thousands of schools around the United States, the District of Columbia, and five U.S. territories participating. The school winners, including Jesse Von Fange will now take a written test, up to 100 of the top scorers in each state and territory will be eligible to compete in their state Bee April 2.
The National Geographic Society with its co-sponsors will provide an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C. for state champions and their teacher escorts to participate in the National Geography Bee hational championship on May 25 and 26.
