for a claim by phone. The completed application is then mailed for verification, signature, and return to our office for processing.

Your birth certificate, proof of recent wages, and other documents (depending on the type of claim) will be needed at this stage. You may bring the original documents to our office, where they will be photocopied and returned to you. Or, you can mail the original documents to the office and the same procedure will be followed.

In a few weeks, you’ll be notified by mail of your Social Security monthly benefit amount and the date it will begin. You’ll also receive a Social Security booklet explaining your rights and responsibilities as a beneficiary and how to report changes that may affect your benefits.

Disability claims take longer to process because an individualized medical evaluation is needed. You may be able to speed up the process by bringing copies of your medical records with you when you apply and the names, addresses, and phone number of all doctors, hospitals, and clinics that have treated you. Even if you don’t have all the documents you need for your claim, you should still file as soon as possible.

If you decide to apply for benefits, you should call Social Security ahead of time to request an appointment and the appropriate booklet for your type of claim. The information you receive may save you a lot of time and make the claims process seem much less complicated.
