on move

As I review the second week of the Virginia General Assembly Session, I must say this has been an eventful week.
All requests for drafting legislation had to be filed with Legislative Services by Wednesday so we had to work very hard earlier in the week compiling information and research for the staff attorneys.
Our Death Penalty carry-over bill was not reported out of House Courts of Justice Committee. The vote was 11-9 to report to full House, but the Chairman, Delegate Almand, changed his vote at the last minute making the vote a 10-10 tie, which means the bill will stay in committee. Although this was not the result I wanted, I will try again by submitting similar legislation in the Senate.
The gun legislation initiative of the Governor has become a hot issue. I am receiving phone calls and letters daily on this issue. As a former FBI agent of 20 years service, I am being consulted regularly by my colleagues because of my experience. The one gun a month proposal as written will not keep the criminals from possessing handguns and as far as I am concerned, one gun a month in the hand of the criminal is one gun too many.
I supported stricter laws that hold the individual responsible for his or her actions and I will not support a law that cannot be enforced. I will continue to watch the other legislative initiatives and make my decision after thoughtful consideration.
