Basically realist, MacNelly’s drawings are more meticulous in style than the barbed wire sculptures, yet never overworked (he must use his grandfather’s hammer, after all!). The pencils have such a fine looseness as to glow, and the ink drawings create a constant interplay of light and shadow. The stuff that great art is made of.
Some of the world’s most beloved art has been created by MacNelly’s fellow cartoonists. His personal favorites are Daumier and Toulouse Lautrec.
“Mixed-Up Media” is a rare opportunity to be a part of art history in the making, as MacNelly has vowed never again to have a first showing of his art. The show will remain at Middle St. Gallery through Sept. 24. The gallery is open to the public 1 1 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday through Sunday, and for the duration of MacNelly’s show the gallery will also be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Mondays.
