Many commentators have dwelled upon the distinction between “anxious” and “eager.” No problem here. “Anxious” is linked to anxiety. When we are anxious about something, we are worried, apprehensive, concerned, almost fearful. When we are eager, we are filled with pleasant anticipation.

What about “avoid” and “evade”? As the taxman will tell you, the two verbs are quite different. All of us have a right to avoid taxes in any way that we lawfully can; but if we evade taxes we are likely to be in deep trouble. “Evade” is a second cousin to “elude,” but the verbs are used differently. The sense of Ezra Pound’s poetry may elude us, or escape us, but it would not evade us.

We’ve talked before about “healthy” and “healthful,” but it will do no harm to repeat: People are healthy, foods are healthful.
