After losing five senior starters from last season’s team, you’d expect Rappahannock County High School Girls Varsity Basketball Coach, Laura Conklin, to expect the worst for this season.
That’s not the case at all. “I expect us to be stronger than last year,” she said. “Position for position we’re a lot bigger than we were last year, especially underneath. We plan on being in every game this year.”
This year’s team will be led by Junior Tri-Captains, Kylene Wolfe, Sara Gentry, and Angie Atkins. All three saw significant Varsity minutes last season, and should be integral parts of this season’s team.
Angie, used primarily as a forward last season, will move to the back court. “Angie is our best ball handler,” Coach Conklin said. “We’re missing a truly strong point guard, so Angie is going to take over there.” Kylene showed that she could play both inside and outside last season. This year she will see time at both the big guard and small forward positions. Sarah began last season with the JV, but played remarkably well after a midseason call up. She can play anywhere on the front line, but figures to be down low most of the time.
