Ground cinnamon
2 cups sugar
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg ' *
2 cups hot water
1/4 cup butter
Sift together flour, salt and baking powder. Cut in shortening until crumbly. Add milk; stir urttil mixture forms a ball.
Divide dough in half. Roll out on floured surface to 12 inch square. Cut in 4 (6 inch) squares. Place 1 apples in the center of each square. Sprinkle each with sugar and cinnamon. Bring corners of dough to top of apple. Pinch edges together. Place in buttered 12x9x2 inch baking dish. Repeat with remaining dough.
Combine 2 cups sugar, 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon and nutmeg in saucepan. Add water and butter. Stir over medium heat until sugar is dissolved and butter is melted. Pour syrup around apple dumplings.
Bake in 350 degree oven 50-60 minutes or until apples are tender. Serve warm with cream, if you wish. Makes 8 servings.
