The Virginia Sheriffs’ Institute has teamed up with Hands Across Virginia and the Department of Housing and Community Development to provide money for assistance to those who suffered damage in the late June flooding.
Funds raised by the Virginia Sheriffs’ Institute will be matched by Hands Across Virginia, making $16,000 already distributed. Of that, $3,000 is reserved for helping build a new house for Virginia Fletcher whose Harris Hollow house was destroyed by the flood. The bulk of the funds, $10,000, will go to Madison County where a number of families have been identified with serious housing needs, and $3,000 will go to a family in Rapidan which lost its home.
Hands Across Virginia is a public-private initiative created by Gov. George Allen designed to promote and oversee volunteer activities during times of state-wide emergencies, such as the recent floods.
