Are we clear on “doggerel,” “verse” and “poetry”? Don’t be deceived by standard definitions that define poetry as verse and vice versa. Doggerel is frivolous stuff, loosely rhymed, unpretentious, but it can be tough to write. Anybody can write verse, especially free verse, which requires neither rhyme nor cadence.
True poetry is something else. It demands intensity of emotion, great skill in the handling of word?, superlative powers of observation and imagination. Not long ago I read of a convention of $2,500 poets.” What rubbish! It would be amazing if the 20th century produces 50 American poets whose work will stand up 50 years hence. While we’re making distinctions, let us distinguish versifiers, who are many, from poets, who are exceedingly few.
